Invisible dog fence or electronic dog fence

This newer system overcomes some of the issues mentioned in part one but as you will see, they are not a fix all. The system works by having an 'invisble' wire which you extend around the perimeter of the area that you want to keep your dog contained in.

Invisible Dog Fence

The wire is not invisible; it is just difficult to see as a casual observer. The dog is fitted with a radio collar which is designed to warn the dog when it approaches the wire. Some systems actually administer a small electric shock to the dog whilst others rely on a training method that uses an audible tone to warn the dog away from the wire.

The Disadvantages of Invisible Dog Fences

This system has distinct disadvantages. Firstly, what happens if the batteries fail in the collar? Your dog will be free to roam anywhere it likes. Secondly, although good at keeping your dog in, these invisible dog fences do nothing to keep any other animals from entering your land.

This brings me onto the third and most important point. If your dog is chased over the wire by a more dominant dog that has entered your land or your dog is chasing a ball or stick and inadvertently strays over the wire, your dog will not be able to return as he will get warned away as he approaches your property. This is far from ideal and may leave your dog isolated, away from the family.

The Best Type Of Dog Fence

The best option that we can advise is to combine a few of the above methods of containing your dog. Firstly, you will want to train your dog not to stray away from your home. If this is done properly, you can be sure that if one of the fences fails, your dog won't simply run away. Good basic training is essential. Additionally, why not combine two methods. If wooden fences are allowed but your dog likes to dig, why not have a wooden fence with an invisible fence around the perimeter. That way you have a good solid fence with the added advantage of an invisible fence.

Apart from tying your dog up which many dog owners don't want, a persistent dog will try and find any way possible to escape containment if that is what they want. The best method is to ensure your dog doesn't have the urge to run away. Some dogs naturally want to stay with the family whilst other dogs need more training. Use a dog fence as a cautionary measure, do not depend on it. Solve the root of the problem first.
