Havanese Puppy

If you are looking for an intelligent, playful and devoted dog then you should consider getting a Havanese puppy or you could consider adopting a Havanese dog from a rescue centre.

The Havanese dog breed is in the toy breed class and part of the Bichon family of dogs. Other dogs in this family are the Bichon Frise and Maltese.

They were originally bred down from the Bichon Tenerife which originated in the Canary Islands. The Bichon Tenerife is now extinct.

The Havanese - Description

The Havanese although in the toy dog breed, is a strong tough little dog for its size. Unlike some toy breeds, fragility is not an issue with this type of dog breed.

They will grow to an average size of about 8.5in to 11.5in (216mm to 292mm) in adulthood. This height is measured at the withers.

The Havanese has two coats that do not easily shed. This is often thought of as a strong plus point with allergy sufferers. The coat is long and soft and can be either straight like the Maltese or curly like the Bichon Frise. They can come in most colors with some of the more common ones being cream, blue, black and gold. The Havanese can come in mixed colors as well.

They are a very intelligent dog and love the company of family members and children. They make good watchdogs and are willing to be very vocal when needed. A very sociable dog that will be loyal. This sociable trait leaves the Havanese with a dislike of being left alone. Leaving this dog for excessive periods of time will cause stress and boredom. Maintaining a well balanced social structure for this dog is essential. They need both social and mental stimulation.

This intelligent streak leaves them open to training. Agility and obedience are both areas where the Havanese will thrive. Where exercise is concerned, the Havanese will be happy with a small yard or a medium to large apartment. They will happily go for walks and any new tricks that you want to teach will be gladly received by a Havanese.

Havanese Health Issues

Some potential health issues are cataracts, hip dysplasia, heart murmurs and deafness. Don't be put off though, a Havanese that has been bred by a recognized breeder or that has been screened for many of the tell tale signs is very unlikely to suffer from these ailments.

In summary, the Havanese is a playful, lovable, loyal, intelligent dog that will become a valuable member to any family. They are also excellent with children. If you are an allergy sufferer, you may want to seriously consider getting a Havanese puppy or adult dog.
