Options When Training Your Dog

When training your dog there are many things that need to be considered. Many factors need to be taken into consideration when choosing which method will be used, and will be effective with your dog.

Each dog is different, and not every method will work on every dog. Each individual dogs personality must be taken into consideration when choosing a method to use. Just because a certain method worked with your neighbors dog, or a friends dog, this does not mean it will work for your dog.

When you decide to train your dog a decision needs to be made whether or not you will be doing the training yourself, or have someone else do it. Doing the training your self may be difficult if you do not know what you are doing. It may also be harder for the dog to listen to you as well, if training has not been attempted before. If you find the dog is not listening to you no matter what you try, a training class may be necessary. If you do decide to train your dog yourself, do your research. Find books and articles on different training methods work. Read many different sources so that you have a good idea of what will work for you and your dog.

If you are skeptical about a method, or don't know how or why it would work, don't use it. Use a method you are confident that will work. Try and choose more than one method to try though in case the first method does not work.A trainer is another option you can try. Doing your research is also important when you use a trainer. Make sure you know which training method the trainer will be using.

If you don't agree with the method that is being used, find someone else to train your dog. Trainers should be well informed on different methods that can be used to train your dog effectively. If one method does not work, they should have ideas on other methods that will work.Keep in mind when training your dog patience, consistency, and persistence are key. Make sure to only use one form of discipline at a time. If you use more than one form of correction you wont know which one did the trick. This will also confuse the dog.

Training your dog can be a long process, but well worth the wait when obedience is achieved. Consistency will ensure that you and your dog are on the same page with the training. Make sure you do not give into your dog, he will be persistent to disobey, but your persistence for him to listen needs to outlast his.
